Hovercraft will always be more expensive than an equivalent sized boat because of its need for a separate lift system. This lift system gives the hovercraft the ability to travel fast over water without generating a lot of wave making resistance. The advantages are that for the same speed, as an equivalent sized boat, the hovercraft will use about half the quantity of energy (fuel). Also, it is amphibious and can cross ice, snow, mud, sand, etc. Perhaps more importantly is the fact that, unlike boats, hovercraft are manufactured in small quantities. Everyone knows that mass-produced items cost much less than hand made items. Hovercraft are hand made. At a rough guess their first coast is roughly twice that of an equivalent boat, however, this eventually comes back in fuel savings.
